A list
Who doesn't like lists? And as High Fidelity taught us, the ultimate "best of" list is the Top 5 list. Unlike longer list formats, the Top 5 list always requires difficult cuts. The Top 5 list is short and to the point, meaning it's rarely dull. The Top 5 list is just long enough to sketch out the shape of your preferences, while providing plenty of material for disagreement.
That said, here are my top 5 SNES games:
1. Soul Blazer
2. Zelda 3: Link to the Past
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Final Fantasy IV
5. F-Zero
I've said before that Link to the Past may be the best game ever, any platform. Nevertheless, I've gone here with a sentimental favorite (and very underappreciated game). Soul Blazer (Soul Blader in Japan) falls directly between Link to the Past and Secret of Mana in the Adventure->RPG spectrum. It uses an overhead view with a single main character, and is just plain fun to play. I believe I played it through more times than any other comparable SNES game.
The amount of excellence left off of this list is ridiculous. But really, my top four pretty much had to be these four games - the hard part was ordering them. Picking F-Zero was tougher, but it felt right.
(This is a followup to my PSX list, which I stand by. I'm still not sure whether Dewprism or Lunar:SSSC deserves the #5 spot, and Final Fantasy VII may be better than Silent Hill, but otherwise that list is good.)
